If you are serious about the music industry, you’ve probably realized that it is a cut throat business that is difficult to break into. You might even be thinking that it is next to impossible to promote your band and get a record deal without financial backing or a band manager that has inside connections. If you want to know how to promote your band and increase your chances of getting a record deal (quickly and cheaply), here are some do-it-yourself ideas that will help get you started.

Don’t just sit there: Do Something. If you can’t afford to hire a band manager (or can’t find one), you’ll have to figure out how to promote your band yourself. Luckily, it’s not as hard as it used to be. You’ll want to use a two-pronged approach to promotion: local promotions and web promotions.

Start looking for local events where your band can play either for free or for a discounted rate. Barter if you have to. But get your music in front of people. Play local clubs. Play charity events. Do whatever you need to do to get people to know your name. Plus don’t forget to hand out flyers with your contact information on it, such as a website, Facebook page, or Youtube account.

This leads us to the second prong of learning how to promote your band yourself: web promotion with a Facebook page and a Youtube account. Start interacting with fans locally on the internet. Their friends WILL notice and will start adding you. You can also take this a step further and start interacting with other fans from all over the world. Building your fan base yourself can be fun and inexpensive if you commit to working on it every day. Don’t you think your odds of getting a record deal will be even greater if you have fans from all over the world? Plus once record labels or band managers start scouting you and see how many fans you have on your accounts, they will be beating your door down with contracts!

Bonus Tip: Don’t forget to add a digital download to some of your songs. You don’t have to give them all away for free, but start with one or two of your best work. You could even put them on a Myspace page so that people can listen without downloading. More fans = more music heard = more chances of getting signed to a record label. Don’t ignore all of the free resources out there that will help you promote your band cheaply and easily!
